So I've finally got weight off Leo which has taken approx 6 months, but I now feel he is at a good weight. I now want to start building muscle on him over the winter so he's in tip top shape for next summer :)

So whats the best ways of building muscle?

I know hill work is quite good for them and a good diet, hes a good doer and currently has a scoop of hi fi lite for breakfast and dinner, and a quater scoop of hi fibre cubes in a ball as I leave the yard at night. He gets approx 10-12lbs of hay over night and is out during the day.

Kinder chocolate if you got this far :D thanks!

Personally....lots of hacking in walk and trot- varying terrain but yes, walking up hills is good.

I've built up a couple of scraggy bums this way:)

(not my own, thats already built up:p)

haha!!! :p

unfortunatley due to work () I can only hack out at weekends now due to getting to the yard when its dark, we're lucky tho we've got lights in our school so can use that in the winter :)

If you've worked him to lose weight and not just cut back on his food then he should already be muscled up and just needs fine tuning. As H says, you can't beat hacking and hill work to keep him fit and if he's worked properly while hacking (not allowed to slop along, always marching) then it will come. You can school just as well if not better while out hacking as they tend to be more forward then.

You need to ensure he has a adequate protein source in his diet.
Then as has been said hill work at the weekend when you can.
Pole work in the school lunged and ridden .
Jumping small grids including using bounces.
Riding lots of transitions including those within the paces.

Yeah he's had less feed obviously in the summer and slightly less hay, but hes on more hi fi lite atm. I think coz Im used to seeing him fat this new skinner version worries me! (always need something to worry about :o )
Yes he is definatley more forward out hacking, he loves it :) will continue with it, thank you! :)

great thanks! :)

what feed would you recommend that has a good protein source that would be good for a good doer?

If you want to give it in a fibre source I would use a mollasses free Alfafa source .as a guide I make sure that mine get 3/4 a kilo of alfalfa chaff for this they are over 16.2 sport horse types.
The alternatives are micronised linseed but that's very high in calories or using a balancer for a horse on a mainly forage based diet my Favorite of these is Spillers cool concerntrate which is not pelleted good for fatties as you give very little and they love it you put it in their chaff and know they will scoff the lot.
Hope that helps.
