As title really, what are the best winter jackets for riding and being at the yard. I want to get a new one for winter, but buy it on the internet so thought would be a good idea to get some ideas from others!! Thanks

I have to say that I love Mountain Horse, they are not cheap but the ones I have are still in great condition years on, so well worth spending the money. Have a look at Equestrian Clearance site they often do them at very good prices. :)

A musto snug, kept me lovely and warm for 6 winters, still washed really well and kept the heat in. I sold it this summer at a table top sale and still got £30 for it, I got it from HOYS for £80 so not too bad

I would advise you to stay away from horsey brands and look at hillwalking or cycling gear. If you want waterproof you need to look either for goretex or paramo analogy, pretty much anything else you are likely to get wet after a while! Invest in something good now and you'll be using it in years to come.

I bought my Goretex paclite jacket (tiny lightweight waterproof that folds into a ball the size of a grapefruit) in 2005, it still looks good as new and is 100% waterproof in the heaviest of rain. It was £150ish full price but I got it half price in a sale. I am normally the only one on the yard who is still dry if we get heavy rain.

About a year later DH bought a similar jacket made out of a generic waterproof breathable fabric for about £50, it is now absolutely on its last legs and doesn't keep him dry.

Oh and buy a thin waterproof (in horse rug terms a no fill) and layer up underneath, much more comfortable, flexible and cheaper than having several weights of waterproof coat. Ideally you only want to have your waterproof on when it is raining or likely to rain the rest of the time you want insulated or windproof as these will be more breathable.
