Barons worm count came back clear so I plan to worm him for tapeworm, as I usually follow a programme set up by one of the other liveries I dont have a clue what to use.

He usually has equest, and this month the programme I was on are dosing with equest paramox.

So any suggestions welcome

Is there not one that just does Tapeworm? As his wormcount was clear I dont really want to worm for all the others aswell. If not I will go with that one as that is what everyone else is using so we get them cheaper because they are bought in bulk.

even though worm count clear, it doesn't show encysted redworms which is what Equest covers so is always worth worming for these at least once a year, maybe twice depending on your situation, even if you're getting clear worm counts. The wormer that just does tapes is Equitape - just dont forget the encysted redworms - they are still a serious problem in this country.

equimax is the best

best for what? it doesn't kill encysted redworms, despite how the manufacturers word their adverts and just stick in tiny print that it doesn't do the encysted stages of small redworms which i'm sure most people just ignore. it does kill everything else, but if your worm count is clear then you dont need to kill everything else and just need tapeworm, then it doesn't make sense to use Equimax and you might as well just use Equitape. Everyone ought to be using Equest at least once a year in either Feb or Nov for encysted redworms though - no exceptions.

Our horse was a new member last year. we wormed him panacur guard when arrived, no evidence of worms (I now know this was not a good move, in our case anyway). Then he blended in with the yard routine prog. When it came to worming with a double dose of strongid-P I was horrified at the tape worms that had come out of him! Yet no sign of worms on previous wormings. Also horrified that this horse moved around on grazing all summer with others! Not happy about that! So although I don't think strongid-P is soley for tapeworm, it certainly cleared any that were there!

I agree with Star that once a year Equest is needed to treat encysted stages of redworm. However, if you have done that, got a clear count then Equitape is a good choice to treat only tapeworms.

For those still on the 5 day wormer programmes I've just tested a horse wormed with that a few weeks ago (and the dose before that was Equimax) and his count was over 2000 eggs per gram. Resistance problems there I think.

Lots of horses don't need four wormers a year, even the manufacturers are saying that now.
