Best wound cream

Im about to move yards and started to go through my stuff and noticed I havent got any wound cream in my first aid kit!! Useless I know! I want to get stocked up asap so wondered what you all use and rate for minor knocks and scrapes. I did have a tiny weeny bit of Dermobian which I know I cant get anymore so what should I buy?

I use Veterinus Derma Gel.

Filtabac is brilliant. If your horse has any pink bits it's also a great sunblock

I don't use wound cream. After a chat with a surgeon friend of mine, he said that minor wounds (i.e. where I'm not calling the vet) then it is actually quicker healing if air is allowed around the cut to stimulate scabbing over. It also means you aren't accidentally locking in bacteria. I just wash wounds if dirty, and if concerned I prefer to use a dressing and bandage than cream.

Obviously major wounds are slightly different, but I'm calling my vet anyway for those.

Thanks, I usually wash with hibiscrub and leave or dab a bit of dermobian on but my trusty dermobian has finally gone and just feel better having something in, loved that stuff, shame we cant get it anymore.

I just slap Sudocreme on everything minor ... Cuts and abrasions, mud fever, insect bites ... Seems to work on everything.

I'm in this camp. I will wash wounds with dilute hibiscrub once, if required and then leave it open to the air. If the wound is getting bothered by flies I will then put summer fly cream on.

There was a fascinating article in the New Scientist a while back extolling the virtues of leaving wounds open to the fresh air. In this post discovery of antibiotics age we have lost touch with the reasons why fresh air is so important to wounds.

Sudocrem for me too, however I do find it does stop them drying up quickly. I have used aloe on a recent sweet itch mess and that dried up the weepy bits within 12 hours then the flies left well alone.

I'm not keen on putting cream on wounds, I find that dirt just sticks to it! For cuts and grazes I wash with hibiscrub, then a squirt of purple spray, then puff some Nettex septi drying powder on, this seems to substitute a scab and protects from flys and dirt, and when the hardened powder drops off a few days later all is clean and pretty much healed!

Depends what kind of wound it is but I either use Wondergel or Filtabac. Warm salt water to wash every time. I find the best thing for wounds is a good breezy day when the ground is hard and dry!! Best environment to heal anything!!

Another vote for not using creams that can trap dirt and germs and slow healing. It depends on the type of wound to some extent, but for keeping wounds clean and encouraging healing I have had good results with Dermisol solution (the one in the squirty bottle).

I was another who left open to the air. If the wound was dirty lots of water to wash. If I felt it needed a bit more I used Wonder Gel. I have used Wonder Gel on me,OH, and dogs, brilliant stuff.

I am ANOTHER sudocrem fan.. literally works for everything; human and our furry friends!

recently though a friends mare had grazed herself and put Carr&day Martin "protection plus" on it, must admitt this worked wonders and hair is starting to grew back already after just a day or two.

It depends on the wound.

Larger wounds should not be left to dry (lots of research on the benefits of a moist healing environment) but a dressing would be preferable to cream. For minor wounds I feel keeping them covered is still beneficial and keeps flies at bay too so anything that sticks really. Summer fly cream would probably get my vote.

Thanks everyone for all your replies. I ordered some Derma Gel yesterday, didnt expect so many replies as Im normally a thread killer lol but had loads of replies since so loads to go at. Ive got a massive tub of Sudacrem at home and have used that before, just never thought about using that.

Glad no one has recommended Gentian Violet spray - okay if you want a mild anti-fungal / antiseptic, but not much good for wounds of any seriousness. Ditto so-called "Green Oils" - anything oily is a booger to get off if you want to clean a wound properly as it just traps the nasties.
