Beware- Fly Strike!

This is gross, but when I checked my old mare's melanoma under her tail today, I found about 6 maggots on it. I have washed them all out with difficulty and thankfully no damage done, apart from owner trauma. But I just wanted to warn people to check melanomas in this weather because the horse was showing no signs of irritation at all and has never had this problem before.

Hi Wulfie,

I lost my mare 2 and a half years ago due to melanoma's and I experienced this once in summer -despite caking her in fly repellant.

The vision of it still haunts me, I felt terrible and it was horrific to see maggots under there - but she really didnt seem to care.

Horrid things - YUCK

I hope you mare's melanomas dont ever cause any serious problems and she has a long and happy life.
