Went down to yard to bring ponies in yesterday(privately rented just our 2 ) and whilst we were there a police car pulled up and the officer came through to talk to us.
He said that he had driven by earlier and noticed that our main gate had been left unpadlocked and just to warn us that there had been a number of horse thefts in the area anything from shetlands to thoroughbreds.
Obviously very pleased that he had taken the time to drive back when we were there to let us now and thanked him, drive is usually padlocked but had left it for a delivery, but also a bit worried as i have not heard anything about the thefts and we are in a fairly close knit(gossipy) area.
So just to pass the warning on to people. We are in the Chesterfield/Dronfield area.

I'm not far up from you, more Coal Aston way, and I haven't heard of any thefts (horses). Was it definitely a patrol car?

Edited to add: Have heard of LOTS of tack going in the past year or so though

Yeah Bethie, did say to my OH that if he hadnt been a PC in uniform driving a marked car I might have been suspicious that he was checking the place out as like I said not heard of any thefts myself and news travels fast round here.

I am afraid that there are a lot of horses, tack, horseboxes and trailers being stolen at the moment.

The onlt advice I can give you is to get your horse(s) freezemarked on their shoulders and also micro-chipped with the new European standard micro-chip. (Take a photo of your horse from the front and rear and each side) (Keep some mane and tail including root follicles for DNA identification purposes) Get all tack tack marked marked and the postcode painted on the roof of your traiker or horseboxes in very large letters. Fit horseboxes with a battery isolator and also a petrol cut off switch. Remove wheels from trailers.

A large amout of stolen tack is recovered but it is impossible to identify the owner unless it is tack marked.

It is very difficult for police or members of the public to identify a horse unless it is freezemarked.

Lol Pedantic, thats exactly what my dad said when our saddles were stolen

We're a more towards Derby area but I haven't heard anything either. Is there anyone who belongs to or has contacts within Derbyshire Horsewatch who could enlighten us further?

People criticise the death penalty, but it has a very low rate of recidivism!

Sadly the police officer was probably misled by some of the myriad idiots who insist on reporting windtangles in their ponies' manes as attempted thefts.

All this just perpetuates the myth

Even so there are defiantly lots of tack thefts in derbys/notts at the moment.I know this because I had £2k work of saddles taken not that long ago and a friends electric units all went last week.
The hair tangles thing makes me PMSL though & the poor police have no idea that its just muppet owners.

Thieves about New mills Derbyshire

Thieves stole horse trailer, loading trailer . quad, rugs brushes yard equipment, head collars, hay, yard brushes shavings forks shovels and even all the horse feed from my friends secure yard in New Mills, trailers were secured with the necessary clamps buildings properly secured, they just smashed everything and cut everything with bolt croppers. Even went in horses stables and took the rugs hanging from in there. Horses are now very stressed, my friend is devastated. Ears and eyes open they are rife in the glossop newmills and marple area, even after the horses so all stick together and note any suspicious people are vehicles hanging around.
