The stages carry more weight than say the horse owner's certificate in the professional sense.

To get to the first teaching qualification which is the BHSPT, you'll need to take both the riding and horse care parts (they're seperate exams but it's cheaper to take them both on the same day) for Stage 1 and Stage 2. You need your Riding and Road Safety before you take your stage 2 riding exam. Then take the PTT and you get the BHSPT award.

To get the AI qualification, you need to take your stage 3 (both parts) plus equine specific first aid, child protection and build up a teaching portfolio. Once all that's done - you send the lot off to the BHS and you get awarded the AI.

Loads of info here: http://www.bhs.org.uk/content/Ods-More.asp?id=1799&pg=Education&spg=Information&area=2

Click on the diagram at the bottom and you can see each of the syllabi for each exam.

Definitely do able as a part time job - you've just got to find somewhere that knows the "BHS" way as they do have the odd bit which most people wouldn't do (how many people fold rugs before putting it on?) Stage 1 is common sense, stage 2 is slightly deeper, stage 3 starts getting into theory stage.

Shilasdair on here can probably explain 10 x better - I've been out of the system too long
