Having got my stage two results back today starting to think about sitting these...

I'm 17 in June but am I right in saying that stage 3 you have to be 17 for (which shouldnt be a problem as I'm def not gonna sit it before my bday!) but you're PTT you have to be 18 for, in which case there isnt any point in rushing to do my stage 3 and I should just wait until piddle of the winter to do my stage 3 and aim to do my PTT next summer?

thanks, sorry I just have so many different syllabus and letters etc and seem to have different age restrictions on all of them!!
 
Well done on your stage 2. I'd give the BHS exams dept. a call and ask what the current age restrictions are.

on the BHS website it says min age of 17 for stage 3 and min age 18 for PTT. Hopefully their website should be up to date, if not i guess you could email them.

I have my stage II in June, how did you find it?
 
I thought I did awfully but didnt get any crosses! Its okay, i found practical oral and theory bits easier than the rest but think i had the "nasty" examiner for my practical and felt like crying at the time!!!

The lunging was ok, very straightforward just walk and trot on each rein but make sure you send the horse forward and do use the side reins! The riding was okay aswell, I hadnt had any stage two riding lessons as such but it was fairly clear what they were asking for!

I have my stage 3 and ptt forms and the age restictions are 17 and 18.
If you feel you are ready to do your stage 3 before you turn 18 then put in for it you don't need your ptt to do your stage 3. Don't rush either of them, just take it all at your own speed and put in for them whenever you are ready doesn't matter if that happenes to be in 6 months time or 2 years time.

Fwiw, I know someone who sat her stage 3 before she was 17, as she got in touch with them about it. I'm not sure how she managed it, but they let her sit the exams. I can't remember if she was 15 or 16 at the time though.
 
The stage 3 is a relatively big jump from the 2. The theory/oral in particular and they expect you to improve the horse much more through the riding. There is no commander in the riding you are expected to work the horse yourself to a short brief.

If you feel ready for the Stage 3 take it in the summer, you then have the winter to resit if needed (I passed 1,2 and PTT first time failed 3 once, have now failed stage 4 riding 3 times!!!argh!!!) If not then wait til the winter to be absolutely prepared. The PTT age limit is 18, try to get in as much practise as possible bevfore the PTT as the examiners are very wary of 'college' candidates who have only taught other college candidates.

Where are you based? Where did you take the 2 and who was your mean examiner, PM if you prefer. In my stage 3 (the one I passed) I had a male examiner who asked me to explain the first section of the fittening process, as I started to speak he ignored me and started to read a paper in front of him, then looked up at me as if I had just said 'when a horse turns 5 one leg drops off, it grows wings and flies away to pegasusville to learn acrobatics'. He then pointed at me, went 'STOP', pointed to the next girl and went 'CARRY ON'. I felt small and stupid and very very angry!!!!!!!

Just something to bear in mind, they dont run stage 3 exams over the winter because of the XC phase so it mite be worth you getting it done over the summer if u want to do it

I'm sure its 17 for stage 3 and 18 for PTT. I've got both mine in June; just the riding part of the stage 3, hoping to pick up the care part over the autumn as I can't face doing all the book learning for that and the PTT!!!

I took my Stage 2 at Summerhouse, absolutely loathed it, nearly cried about half way through but passed with no crosses! Seems to be something that happens a lot tho.

For my 3 I'm doing a 10week course at the centre with the exam at the end, chose a place with nice forward going horses rather than riding school dobbins as I am rubbish with lazy horses

Well done on passing your 2!!!!! I'd take your three now if you think you're ready and pick up the PTT anytime. The more real teaching experience you've had the better as the BHS examiners tend to be impressed with confidence in delivery rather than overly technical stuff I think.
