After my insurance company wouldn't pay out after my horse died I am looking into insuring my horses with someone else, or canceling my insurance on my older horses and only insuring my youngster and using BHS Gold Membership for Personal Liability and Personal Accident cover.

Has anyone used BHS Gold Membership, was it worth the money?

I'm a BHS gold member, therefore have the PL cover, which in my eyes is the main one.

Got absolutely fed-up with other insurance companies little gripes etc etc...so cancelled them all, and joined the BHS....

I have a credit card with a VERY large limit for any emergencies that might come our way, to pay the vet bills!

:D

Got it but never used it and it does as said above. I think it gives good peace of mind. Also you get to join the BHS too with the local mag coming through the door telling you what's on.

I'm a BHS Gold member too. I've been grateful for their advice line. You get the public liability insurance, which is critically important, plus some other stuff, the magazine, free entry to Hickstead and of course you are supporting the BHS which (imho) is a really worthy cause and a lot more use than at least one other animal charity I can think of.

Yup. I and D1 are Gold members :D

Good way of supporting the BHS, plus I looked at what the insurance companies were covering on two of our neds, realised it wasn't worth what I was paying, so cancelled. Those two won't go through an operation anyway and one is aged so covered for peanuts anyway, and the other has more exclusions than you could shake a stick at now. Am considering cancelling what I have on Dizz as well, as she'll never go through an op or anything that requires extended box rest either. Just GM is fully covered with NFU.

I spoke to the BHS before I cancelled the others insurance, just to make sure I was covered if, for example, something went wrong when I was riding, and D1 was riding, and a friend was on one of our others. They said yes, so I felt confident to cancel. Note: we would have kept our Gold membership anyway as it's not a lot of money and it's a good organisation to be part of :D

Hi,

Sorry to interfere in the thread!
My pony is currently insured with KBIS (third party only-if he damages peoples property or hurt someone-) and I pay £76 per year.

I have been looking at BHS gold membership for when it's time for me to renew the insurance and would like to know if public liability means the same as third party please? (sorry I'm French!)
Otherwise what does it mean please?

Many thanks :-)

It's also worth checking your house insurance policy for public liability insurance, my horse is covered on that, although only for hacking. Apparently the BHS will ask you to make a claim with your household policy before they will pay anything anyway.

Another little thing to bear in mind is my public liability insurance with my usual horse insurance has an excess of £100 - the BHS Gold Membership Public Liability Insurance has an excess of £1000, so no matter what the claim you have with them through BHS you will pay the first £1000 which to some people is an awful lot of money.

what if your horse escaped from a field? Would you be covered then??

and to the other poster, yes 3rd party and public liability are the same thing

Yes, it is exactly the same cover as the BHS barring using the horse for competitions/hunting etc.

As I said the BHS would expect you to claim with that anyway.
