Hi all, We are a small riding school/livery yard and are seeking BHS approval, our inspection day is just next week. I was wondering if anyone here had been involved in an inspection before and if so could they offer any 'top tips'.... I know that we cant have any cleaning products around the loo.... First aid kits must be locked away but any tips appreciated...getting nervous now!! Thanks in advance:)

The inspectors are usually helpful. Off the top of my head they will want to see your council license and insurance documents, details of instructors and their qualifications, evidence of employee contracts and appraisals, records of veterinary care, farrier, worming, dentist etc, horse assessments, client registration forms, livery contracts (if you have liveries), accident book, health and safety documentation eg COSHH, risk and fire assessments, evidence of a complaints procedure etc etc.

They will also check all facilities, fences, any horses in and watch any lessons underway while they are there. Make sure you have safety cups for the back rail on oxers - last year was the first time this was checked with us. Make sure things are neat and tidy and above all safe, that fire notices etc are clear. A lot will already have been covered by your council inspection eg fire extinguishers etc. After this time your inspections will be unannounced so you won't have time to panic!

The inspectors are always really nice. They are thorough- any little maintenance jobs that need doing, do before they come. Check field fencing, check for weeds in fields as ragwort is starting to pop up. Make sure you have a proper isolation stable or block, and dont have anything in it when the inspector comes!

Thanks for the replies, very helpful. have a list of things I want to get done before the inspection but time seems to be slipping away! I am hoping that the whole point is that they want to raise the bar for establishments and encourage good practise etc so that they will be out to help rather than fail but cant help feeling I have an exam approaching! It has been a really useful exercise for us in that you look at things with fresh eyes as if you were the inspector and see things you perhaps didn't before......Any more tip appreciated...Im off to keep on preparing!!x
