I have BHS Insurance for D as it works out cheaper than buying it through SEIB, very odd.

Does anyone know if I would still be covered for public liability if I let a friend exercise her or does it only apply when I ride?

I think it only applies if you are riding & your friend should get their own. I think this is also bit of a sticking point with most public liability polices TBH so always worth getting your own cover to protect yourself.

It's not really odd. The BHS insurance is negotiated on the basis of about 55,000 members - so BHS gets a good rate (I know, I used to have the job of twisting Barry Fehler's arm up behind his back!

) But - in addition - the BHS Public Liability policy is a policy 'of last resort' - i.e. it kicks in ONLY if you don't have other insurance that would cover you (and lots of people do!)

But it covers YOUR liability as the owner of YOUR horses - provided they aren't used for 'hire or reward' and it covers you for YOUR liability when someone else is riding your horse - as long as they are not paying you - or you are not employing them. So if friend is riding and is involved in an accident with - say - a car and the car driver wants to sue, the BHS insurance would cover YOUR liability as owner of the horse, even if you are not riding it at the time.
