BHS Scotland Low Flying Alert

August 2009

BHS Scotland and the RAF would like to alert horse riders across Scotland that three Puma Helicopters based at RAF Leuchars will be carrying out low flying exercises from August the 3rd to the 7th.

As usual exercise planners and participating aircrew will do all they can to ensure this essential training activity is conducted in a manner that causes minimum disruption to members of the public.

Horse riders are reminded to use fluorescent/reflective gear while riding so that they can be spotted and avoided by low flying aircraft.

The low flying helpline number is 0800515544

Sorry only know what is in the message--if you have a specific concern eg PC rally or other horse event try the helpline number.

I live on the training flight path and have jets and helicopters almost daily , now and again the Hercules aswell . in fact i live so high up the aircrafts fly below me , now that is very weird when out riding .thankfully my horse does not bother at all .

Hi Cuffey,

Thanks for the warning.

Just had a thought - why not inform Radio 2 - Lynne Bowles + Sally Traffic - about these dangerous training things? How many times have we all been driving along, heard an immense screeching sound, hit our brakes? Only to realise it's just a jet, training.

A few weeks ago, i was within a few miles of a training jet which came down near Loch Lomond (RIP 2 lads lost xx). It could well have landed on village, my vehicle, my dogs, me, etc. Ok, Sally subsequently said road was closed, bless her.

But it hit home to me, just how close our war tools are to all of us, and the price + cost we all pay, demanded by the party in power.

But surely the way forward, is not the way we've always done, but rather that which our last Great War hero believed (RIP Harry x) - ie we sort it by discussion, not by killing. I listen to people like him, not the money-orientated politicians of today, and i question why we need to spend so much on defence - and on things that spoil a lovely hack?!

Hope i've set some of you thinking, all bests, BS x
