Was just wondering if you get to choose whether to plait with bands or whether needle & thread is compulsory? My instructor said she wasnt given the choice & sewing was the only option. After reading catembi's thread i'm steering clear of needles for a while!!!

I was given the choice and opted for bands. Obviousely practising with both is the ideal (and this is one of the few things that is essential to have a good demo of, books just don't help enough). One (slightly sneaky) trick is if handed a needle and thread and asked to plait whilst the horse is in a stable on a bed, to ask for bands with the justification that if you drop the needle in the bed it could be dangerous for the horse.

Wasn't given the choice, only given bands! the pony I plaited only had half a mane where it had rubbed it out, and the other half went down to its shoulder!!! So I did my best and plaited it's forelock too which looked resonable and the examiner was quite happy.

Nobody told me you have to plait for Stage 2!!! I am doing it next year and the 1 and only time I tried, after 40 mins, the 1st plait fell out and my finger was attached to the 2nd!
