Any experiences? Advice? My friend is taking this in a couple of weeks - she has been training at a local riding school, but all the instructors there took their exams many years ago and are a bit woolly about the actual format of the exam. There's not much online either - the video in the BHS shop is for the PTT, not the new exam.

What kind of thing is expected for the Stable Management lesson? Is tacking up ok, or brushing and care of the horse (picking out hooves etc) or...?

Will she be leading the lead-rein rider? She's used to having group lead-rein lessons with helpers leading the ponies.

Any other info gratefully received - she doesn't like computers so I said I'll ask and I'll show her the responses!

Thank you so much in advance for any help!

I just took (and failed) my exam a couple of weeks ago, but I also have some friends who've recently passed it. I might do a longer post about my exam as a form of self-therapy...

Stable mgmt will be 1 of four topics - Putting on saddle, bridle, boots or rug. The topics expected to cover are exactly those covered in stage 1 and 2, i.e. you should be prepared to talk both about how to put the tack on/off, demonstrate, allow pupil to practice, and how to fit the same.

Lead rein will be a 1-2-1 lead rein with the instructor leading the pony yes. It's a very short lesson, only 20 min. It's basically mount, adjust position, walk, stop, turn left, turn right, wee bit of trotting and you're done.

Overall, the intent of the new format is to move away from an exam focused on "directing riders" to expecting the student to develop their riders in the sessions - though how this is applied in the exam seems to vary by the assessor based on mine and my friends exams.

The group lesson is also quite strict - it needs to fit a a warm-up, a flat exercise and a jumping exercise (where they need to go through a grid or a related distance, with 3 riders) in 40 minutes. You need discipline and a plan to manage!

Lead rein lesson is definitely leading the rider, one on one private lesson style. Very much about safety in that one. I know someone who failed it because they weren't explaining things to the rider properly.

Group lesson is around four people where it's a progressive flat to jump 40min coaching lesson, and must show improvement.

Then there's the lunge lesson.

The new syllabus is very detailed https://pathways.bhs.org.uk/media/1810/stage-2-teach-qualification-structure-030718.pdf
