Just a quick question, feel a bit silly asking this, but bear with me!

I am working towards BHS Stage 1 at the moment, and my instructor thought it would be a good idea, if I rode in my long riding boots for a change, instead of usual half-chaps/short boots, because in the exam, you're expected to wear boots.

Anyway, my long boots are pretty old (like me maybe!) and have dropped considerably, so they're a bit folded up round the ankles - my instructor wasn't thrilled with them!

Will they still be okay for a BHS exam or will they also frown on them? All it says in their guideline, is boots should be clean and in good repair - but if my instructor is sniffing at them, will the examiners too?

I'm thinking it might be necessary to get some new ones!

For stage 1 - as long as you look smart and tidy, it's not a problem.

If your chaps are of the leather/gaitor design than wear them. That's what I wore for mine

Thanks! My chaps are the fake suede type, so not really suitable. My instructor doesn't like my chaps either!

But I think she has poor eyesight, and she says that she can't tell whether the ends of the chaps are actually my heels!

I think eventually I'll get some new boots, as mine have VERY chunky ankle areas and are not brilliant to walk in. And as the exam is no doubt stressful, comfort is paramount!

I've heard that the lace-up field boots are good because they're supposedly less rigid in the ankle/foot department.

Although all the ones I've seen, seem to have that pointless bit of leather on the outside top and high tops (Spanish I think they're called), which I don't like. Picky, me?!

As long as they are clean and not full of holes im sure it wont matter if they are a bit old. You cant wear chaps, you need to wear either your leather boots or leather gaiters with short boots.

Where are you taking your exam? I took mine at Myerscough college a few months ago.

Hi
I've done a few exams, and worked in an exam centre....at Stage 1 they are pretty forgiving as to dress (but suede chaps are a definitie no no) so your boots should be fine.
It's more important that your clothes are practical, neat and tidy, rather than new/posh.
Good luck with your Stage 1
