BHS stages - teaching

Stage 1 care + riding
riding and road safety
stage 2 care + riding

THEN choice of next taking either stage 3 care + riding OR preliminary teaching test

once PTT plus stage 3 plus portfolio completed you get the BHSAI.

The best instructors I've had have been those with no qualifications and who have learned through time-served experience. I would not have instruction from anyone who claimed to be BHS qualified. There is a girl on the yard I am on now who is just about to take the final exams to become a riding instructor. I wouldn't let her ride either of my horses - she's got the skills and common sense of a gnat!!

I worked for years as an instructor with nothing more than a Stage 1 and a R&R safety. I kept meaning to take the rest but I worked horrendous hours and they were expensive! Bizarrely I trained 4 or 5 people up to Stage 3, just never got round to doing it myself. It enver really stopped me getting a job, although it did mean I could teach on BHS approved yards without an AI present. If I'd intended to teach full time and started younger then I'd have made sure I did my AI, but as I kinda fell into it I never did
