Hi a question for aanyone using big bale straw, how long does a bale last you? I have 3 horses just now and my yard owner recons i would be cheaper badding them on straw. They are on shavings just now and i am using a bale for each of them once a week if they are out through the day. if for whatever reason they are in through the day i use more. Also how much does everyone pay for a bale.

I Had 4 Heston Bales over the winter, from November , till just ran out ( End of feb/start of march )
£30 a bale

for my one horse in over night, i have a huge bed take out all dirty everyday and each one lasted me a month, i thought it was very good for money! im going onto wood pellets for summer, but they do so much better than small bales..

I pay £15 for a big straw bale. I have had mine for ages now but I have only got a new forest yearling and he's the cleanest pony I have ever met!

I love straw now . . . took me a while to get used to (Kal used to be on flax), but I love it. I can't help you with how long a bale lasts b/c YO charges a flat fee for straw (£20/month) and we can use as much (or as little) as we like. However, based on the size of Kal's bed (and what a dirty beggar he is), I would say a large bale would probably last us about a month . . . maybe less.

I have to say that I was probably spending £20/week on the flax/rapasorb, so it's a huge savings for me.

thanks for your replies folks. One of the other liveries is on the straw and she said a big bale lasts her a month and it is £25 a bale so i have been trying to think for next winter if it would be cheaper to make it worth the swap. I dont think there is much in it to be honest.
