Hi All

Quick question my horse is shod in front, he is fine bare foot at the back however just of late he has taken to pulling a front shoe off between farrier visits. So I was thinking of getting a boot to tied me over but he is a shire X with big feet so I have only found one boot that has his size which is a cavello BHF does anyone have any reviews of this and are they left and right handed ? They only sell them as just one boot so I suspect they are not any help appriciated before I make the purchase or any other boot suggestions for big footed cobs ? Thanks

I use the normal size cavallos, and really like them! I don't think there is any difference in style etc to the BHF.

I would say though, just be careful on wet grass/mud as cavallos can be fairly slippery in these situations.

I don't know what size your horse is, but size 9 scoot boots are hugh, my horse is a 4/5 in cavallos and I bought 9 scoots thinking they'd fit, but they were way to big, he's now in a 7!

also be careful with the size chart! based on chart my horse would be a size 6, but as I say, he fits in a 4 after a fresh trim and a 5 as he's closer to needing a trim!

another also! I always prefer to buy second hand boots as they're a bit more broken in, so they're easy to get on and off! there is a good second hand market for the standard boots, but I'm not sure if the BHF have the same level of re-sale-ability!

there's some good sites on FB for used boots though

I haven't used these but I do use Cavallo Treks, which are basically the same but smaller
Treks can go on either foot so I guess it's the same for the BHFs
Weirdly I have found Scoots and Cavallos to be pretty similar in size

the Cavallo big foot will do either left /right, can alter the side that the fastening strap attaches - but do need to measure to get the appropriate size.
Old Mac G2s and New Mac (sold in pairs, although could use either hoof, from Easyboot) and New Trails are all good for a rounder, large hoof - provided you measure and buy the appropriate size. Mentioning, because recently seen unused, huge pairs (sizes 11) very cheaply on ebay
If thundering around on slippery short grass, can fit studs for grip, to any of these models, but Cavallo are probably worse for slipping.

Use an online consult! Hoof Boutique or the Hoof Boot Shop will look at measurement photos and advise! I ended up with different boots than I wanted but have never had a problem with them.

A friend of mine just got cavallos for her very large boy and getting on very well with them. They aren't right or left handed.

Cavellos work well as long as you aren't charging about the place.
I tried them on my draught x type, when I was trying to keep his foot dry and clean after debriding. Measured him up, bought a second hand pair of BHB size 8 - although the hoof fit, I could not then bring it up over the heel bulb, and no chance it would do up.
I did contemplate the size 10, but think I would have had the same problem. The size 9/10 gaitors were no where near big enough.
Unfortunately cavello seem to be the only boot that go that big. There are several FB groups for second hand sales.

You could get a rubber fetlock ring. My gelding used to do the same thing - and he would also pull bell boots off with his teeth. Now he wears his bracelet all the time and no more problems. However, not sure how it work with feathers......

You can only put the fetlock ring on one leg though, or diagonal pairs if you need fronts and back cos it interferes with their gait if on both fronts.
