New to the forums and cobs, although not new to horses I've just never had a cob before.

A little bit of background on the amazing Merlin.
He is almost 2 is bum high standing approx 12hh and hopefully he will reach about 13.2 - 14hh
He's a pink blagdon colour (we think) will find out when he sheds out. Hasn't had the best start in life unfortunately so the poor lad has been stuck with needles, wormed had his feet trimmed for the very first time, doused in lice killer, fed Lots of hay and some conditioning mix - had his teeth done and is starting to be a little less nervous and starting to realise I'm not going to beat him with big sticks.

I'm having to put up some new fencing for him as he just loves jumping out. So here for recommendations really.

I have been looking at 6ft post and rail and 3-4ft hawthorn plants for a hedge or stud rail/centaur but I wonder if he would just climb over the centaur.

Anyway this probably isn't the right area for questions so if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be very thankful. 😀😀

Sounds like good solid fencing for any horse. If he persists in jumping just put electric a meter or so in front of post and rail. If he can take that on he needs to go to John Whittaker !

Thank you Adorable Alice. lol I'm not sure about that but I can see he will be a really good jumping pony as he will clear a flat 4ft sheep hurdle at a walk. May have to put a board extension a foot inside the fence - no access to electric and I don't fancy him getting tangled in tape as if it's too high he throws the front feet up and tries to climb.

Why is he jumping out? Its usually easier to solve the why than the fencing. Has he got company? Plenty of grass or hay etc?

Hi Leo,
He's jumping out because there is more grass outside the current paddock. I do leave ad lib hay for them both as right now they are on my 'sacrifice' paddock and he prefers the grass. My movable fencing (the sheep hurdles) has been moved as much as I can and I've run out of places to put it.
He's also a colt. Due to his condition vet feels it's better to leave him until autumn until we geld him.

Because he's a colt I feel it's important to make sure I have really secure fencing. Either way I must put a larger paddock in as my set up is only designed for a small pony and really isn't roomy enough for them both during winter- I hadn't planned on getting another so it's all a bit last minute.

So I'm going to fence a half acre - extra acre for winter for next year, (with a possible separate acre on poor land)as this paddock will run down part of the field line that goes onto a road I want extra security down that side.
😊
