big jumping horses - how not to fall off??

The team chasing season is coming up on us quick now, I'm doing intermediate/opens with my horsey who hasn't done any before.

I'm really excited but the thing is, my horse tends to jump quite huge sometimes, just for the fun of it, and although he's never jumped me off, there's been a few near misses!!

Anyway, as i don't want to let my team down, any quick fix tips for staying on!??

- im am soooooooo close to flying out of the saddle on Hattie at every jump sjing and XC - it feels like coming down a 6ft drop after every fence because she really flicks her whole back end up!!

ummmm, get a big chunk of mane or hold onto your breastplate if you think a big jump is coming up., sounds simple but it really works

Yea, thats what Badger does! Used to be at everything when he was a baby but now he just puts in the odd one to catch me out!

I seem to call a lot of cabs at the moment!! Does make things more fun though!!

the only thing is (personally) if i grab a neck strap or a clump of mane, it pulls me forward so when i am coming down on landing , she comes down soooooooo steeply my legs end up flying back and im almost unseated

i just spend the whole time coming down on landing having totally slipped my reins and having to really lean back!! and when there's a drop on landing i get very close to being a gonn

I've never really got the whole neck srap thing, I don't understand how you can give with your hands appropriatly and also how you lean back to balance youself over a big drop!

I dont get it either, just what my instructir tells me to do
 
I think thats why i call a cab cos it's normally out hunting and if i let my rains go altogether we may never be seen again!!

I think Hattie will grow out of it a bit, a lot of it is inexperience and they just think "well, if i jump as high as i can i know I'll manage it!" I'm sure she'll always put a few ones in to keep you on your toes though! xx

i like her big jump i just wish she'd tone it down a bit like today when we were XC schooling and we came over a good sized Pre Novice fence she lept it and i was whacked in the face by a pine tree kind of branch because she jumped sooooooo high and then the landing was lower than the take off and i landed in a heap on her back with very little rein contact!!!

Yes, and at the end of the day, it's better to think you might get jumped off than thinking that they might hit things, that would be very scary!! saying that though Badger manages to have his fair share of poles show jumping nowadays! I wish he didn't know the difference between a showjump and a stone wall!

Is she the chestnut in your sig? If so she's definitly giving that white sj plenty of room!

Wack stirrups up a hole, and try keep your lower leg forward as much as possible With heel down! I went through the same when used to jump my ickle cob over big country, sitting back as much as possible, whilst still going with them is quite difficult!! Lovely piccies, and gorgeous horse though!!

I tend to get "pinged" so I'm flying a bit, not actuallly in the saddle but will try and keep my legs forward!

Lol! I know, its a nightmare... Its easier said than done, I seem to have lost the knack now back on horse.... Otherwise, grip like ****!??

I can't do that or I'd be pulled far too far forward (look at picks, if i'd had hold of his main) and would really gob him on take off. I think it works for other horses but not mine

Saddle tight!!! its amazing stuff ut like gold dust!!! its in like a small deoderant lookin tube.... a kinda wax whch makes u stick to saddle like glue....
 
i've had a couple of near parting company moments when he completely over jumps things and takes me by surprise. We should take up stunt riding with some of our clinging on tactics! He had been nicely doing grid work the other week when he suddenly decided to treat it as a huge spread and jumped the whole dam thing!
 
Good question - almost got jumped off Lexi on Saturday - delighted she is using herself so well and would hate to discourage her, but I had to pull her out of the third part of our little exercise because I was almost off the back of the saddle!!

I find the neck strap works a treat for green, spooky horses because they give a fair bit of warning that they are going to do something odd.

Not so good for more experienced horses that just do it for fun!

The only answer really is to learn to sit it.......by jumping loads with the horse. It may help if you can learn to soften yourself at the hip too (does that make sense

), so that your body absorbs some of the excess energy

If you can learn to sit it, and harness it, then it is a very desireable trait in a horse
