One of my liveries horse was found with a front leg like an elephants - he had been sound when brought in but the leg blew up overnight when stabled, right from the fetlock to his chest. Initially he would not put weight on it and the vets first reaction was a break/possible fracture. On a later assessment she felt it might be a chest muscle strain. 4 days on he is now sound, but the leg is still filled to about 3 times the size of his other one and shows no sign of going down. There is no sign of infection/mud fever etc so we are all a bit baffled,
He is on 1 bute 2x a day and was also given a steroid injection.
Any ideas?

It will take a while for swelling to that extent to disapear. Is he turned out? it might help to dispurse it. and depending on the size of the horse you may be able to give him more bute.

Now he is sound he is going out twice a day, for around 1/2 an hour each time, and we are hoping movement will bring the swelling down. My first reaction was lymphangitus, but wouldn't have expected him to be so lame initially. The bute given is as the vet prescribed
Thanks for your reply.

Ah that is interesting.... Owner is debating whether to get vet back out or leave it another couple of days to see if it goes back down.

My horse has had lymphangitis a couple of times. Both times in alot of pain. The second time I couldn't even get her back to own stable after hosing the leg and had to spend a week in the one nearest the tap. It hurt so much she could hardly bear to spread her legs to have a wee
