two guys have been seen on our yard (STORETON HALL FARM) at 3.30pm with 2 staffordshire bull terriers with them, looking around the yard and asking if there are any spare stables and asking about a few horses if they have been backed!!!!!!!!!!!

We have contacted the police etc and we have done the best to try and reduce anyone stealing! Which include me and a few other people actually sleeping at the yard tonight!!!

This is really freaking me out as mojo is a typical horse that they want and will go with them!!!!!!

Is it true they are knifing out microchips on horses and shooting them if they find a hidden id mark when they get them back?

i think youre doing the best you can, and be prepared for the worst, it sounds like these people are pretty likely to pay a visit, not trying to freak you or anything!
good luck! tell us how it went tomorrow...

Sorry everyone, but regarding the microchip thing, yes. I've been involved with Horsewatch for a long time, and I know this is true.

The thieves have scanners. If they steal a horse and discover it has a chip, and it's in an easy place on the horse (neck, for instance, although the chips as you probably know do move with time) they will nick it out. They then explain the injury away, if asked, by saying that the horse caught itself on a fence, branch etc. I'm not saying this happens to every horse but it has been known.

As for shooting them, no, not that I've ever heard of.

i asked a vet about the digging out microchip reports a couple of weeks ago , she said as far as she was aware it was nonesense & that because of where the chip is put in the ligamant it would make a real mess of the horse to do so & that also the chips can migrate a fair bit in some cases
