I have had my mare just over a year and at times I have wondered if she is right for me, but today she has just sealed my affections for her and made me realise what a little gem she really is.

She is the first mare I have ever owned in all my years of keeping horses and I have found her soooooo different from the boys. When she came to me she had completely shut down and it has taken me months for me to prove to her that I am good enough to own her lol She has never been difficult as such but aloof and unwilling but this afternoon on this lovely sunny day we went out for a hack around the fields, on our own and I then had a half hour lunge lesson on her and she was.......happy and willing. My achievement with her today has brought a great big smile to my face. My patients and simple calm training is paying dividends and long may it continue. Thank you TicTac, my sweetie mare x

Well done both of you, just keep it up, Dexter was the same when I fist got him and then we made progress and then it all went wrong again until we understood exactly what each other were about.

It was almost as if he was trying to find the chink in my armour

Fingers crossed and onwards and upwards

Well done both of you!

Our first horse was a gelding and all the subsequent ones have been mares. Ours are kept in a settled herd at home with neighbours horses also being pretty stable. We have often found that it can take mares at least a year to settle in. I have had my IDx almost a year now and she has recently become much more affectionate in the stable and less stressy to ride.

I think that the frequent changes that can happen at livery yards can make them even more unsettled for longer.
