Right, just to prove we're not all equine experts, and we've all made mistakes.........

What is the worst mistake you've made? The worst advice you've been given?? Be honest now!!

getting halfway through pulling ponys mane and got bored as it was taking so long so got the sissors out! biggggggggggg mistake as she was left with a completly wonky mane that took ages to grow!

Can't think of any real doozies for myself, but the husband of owner of the mare I used to share once tacked up his mare complete with flash noseband, lead it to the mounting block and got on.......................only it's bit wasn't in her mouth, it was hanging under her chin!!!!

He had owned horses for 20+++ years

Experience doesn't always = knowledge, it can just mean you have been doing it wrong for longer!!!

Think I am going to need others to prompt me to remember any big mistakes I have made as honestly I cannot think of any clangers at all

BEST mistake I have heard ... I was using a Kineton on Boss, hacking out with YO she said "You have that on incorrectly" - "No I don't" I say - "Yes you do, the horseshoe shape should be above the above, not below the bit" - Cue me giggling as YO has forgotten more about horses than I will ever learn...she gets a bit arsey, I stand by my ground, and explain that if the horseshoe bit was the other way the noseband would be 100% useless - she gets in a bit of a grump with me... 1 week later YM tells me that YO has admitted, shamed faced, that I am 100% correct and she doesn't know what got into her LMAO!!!

ETS: The biggest mistake I have ever made is riding through a raging ford when I was told not to...on a horse that I was trying out at a dealers...the dealer was right, we were swept to the stream and I thought I was dead!

My biggest mistake to date, is buying a horse without trying it several times in all circumstances, hence, ending up with something totally unsuitable and losing my nerve.

Won't do that again in a hurry!!
Took my time with Max, asked lots of questions, tried him 3 times, and got it right this time
grin.gif

Won't let my heart rule my head again

I attempted to fit a hanging cheek snaffle upside down (though I did ask someone before putting on the horse!)

A few weeks ago my horse's fieldmate pushed past out of the field as I took my horse out of the gate. I just wasn't concentrating! It took ages to catch him!

One I feel terrible for, until this day.
blush.gif

We were on a hack, when the group leader started to pass down the line that we were going to canter and it came down to me. I forgot that there was someone behind me and the poor girl had the fright of her life when the horses just all sped off forward and she was in tears. I feel awful and that happened about 10 years ago.

I went out on a group hack and rode the ploddiest horse on the yard. The others kept deciding to canter, and not once did anyone warn me (I was at the back). Half the time I only realised when i got took off with!!

various incidents with younger cousins out on hacks..when as the oldest i should have known better

erm, cant really remember any but can vaguely remember some moments thinking "oh S*** michelle/marina is gonna murder me"

Ach! I am sorry "girl's name I will can't remember"- I was in a world of my own.

I think I need to track her down, otherwise this is going to haunt me.....

Anybody know of a girl who went on a riding holiday to Scarborough, about 10 years ago?

Oh, I've just remembered a good one...

My sister (who used to ride with me when we were kids) came to visit a few years ago so I put her on my lovely 16.3 gelding. She hadn't ridden in years but she walked and trotted him round ok. I tried to convince her to canter and she took a while to pluck up the courage- he was being a lazy sod though and wouldn't pick up the canter.... so I chased him a tiny bit with a schooling whip (from a few metres away)... he kicked out at me (only a little warning kick) to say f off and she toppled straight over his shoulder. Ooops
blush.gif

She cried for ages too and I don't think she has been back on since. Lesson learnt!

Oh I dont know - going in a college riding lesson - hated it as all he did was tell me to smack the poor cob I was riding, I got sent out for saying that was wrong.. now have a 'reputation' amongst the instructers as being difficult.

Riding club team qualifiers (ODE). There was a bounce fence with an option, except it wasnt an option! You had to do the option! I just looked at the fence and thought, we'll do the bounce!

Yep horse went straight through the bounce and we were eliminated because i should have done the easier option!!!

I gave up on half chaps for that very reason. Used to hapen every time I put them on.

I do know someone who leaves hers still looped under her boots when she takes her boots off, so she can't get them muddled up!
grin.gif

Sitting on Tills backwards, bareback, while she was loose eating on the yard - I was giving her backside a good brush on the excuse I was too short too see on top of it - and she promptly trotted off toward the fence.

The mistake was deciding to bale when I realised we were 1 stride away from said fence and not stopping. I baled one way, she went the other and fortunately had the sense not to jump and I ended up being thrown threw said fence - which just so happend to be about 4ft and solid post and rail
blush.gif
Needles to say I demolished the fence and mum arrived minutes later to see me sat on the floor, crying and giggling at the same time (you have to laugh in that situation no matter how much it hurts!) and I had to nurse a very bruised bum, eblow and ribcage for a few weeks.

But I was wearing a hat!!

Lesson learnt - don't do stupid things on horses, especially young ones!

I have another.

First time I jumped a fence, I threw my legs so far back, that the response I got from the others was "That was an interesting style.."
blush.gif

My first pony when I was 12 came with a smart set of leather brushing boots. I put these on religiously everytime I rode, and after about the 4th day, someone very nicely pointed out that I had them on upside down
blush.gif

A few years later I went out to catch my horse and a friends. I had my friends leadrope around my neck, the horse came up and I cliped the rope on while it was still round my neck - the horse then walked in front of me and nearly strangled me
shocked.gif
I never did that again!!

Ohhh remembered one...............when I was at college, I went to a pub at lunchtime as it was a friends birthday, 1st lecture after lunch was a riding lesson................most of the lesson was spent falling off, giggling & remounting!!!!! Unfortunately of the 8 students in the lesson, 7 had been down the pub, it was a hot day and we had all had too many!!!!

Ginn, I am so sorry but I am PMSL with the image of you being trotted off backwards, still with brush! lol!

Mums words were "I wish I'd caught it on camera" pmsl!

Looking back I giggle hysterically but I also realise that it was possibly the most dangerous, stupid thing I have ever done - especially as Tilly is only 3!!!

I think my worst mistake was last week. Leading ponio to the gate of the field. A house opposite is having work done and the builders were watching me. One shouted "hey, is that your dog or what?" (as ponio walks on the end of the leadrope) and me being me retorted (nodding towards his mate) "why? are you HIS bitch?" and opened the gate a little and sent ponio before me. He barged, caught his flank on the gate catch and panicked
frown.gif
. He was still poushing foward (gate opens towards you) and I couldnt free him as he was actually closing the gate on himself.
Luckily he wasnt hurt, but he's scared of gates now
frown.gif
. That'll teach me to be cocky.
