I just thought I would update you on Billy's mission to get to the Grassroots champs. After a disappointing time at West Wilts for our first RF where the dressage was not good enough, and a wild SJ round resulted in 2 poles down, we went off to Munstead 100. I have really struggled with Billy's feet over this wet summer and they had really deteriorated in the week before Munstead. This coupled with firm ground left me with a stuffy Billy who wasn't enjoying the ground at all. After a poor dressage by his standards, and stops in the SJ warm up and 2 poles down yet again, I withdrew knowing that he was not a happy chappy.

The farrier came out a couple of days later and said he wasn't surprised that his performance has deteriorated. Thankfully he managed to get pads on him and get his feet looking much better so I have kept Billy on a surface over the last couple of weeks and the physio gave him the all clear 1 week prior to RF no.2 at BCA.

So off we went, with the wonderful Star acting as groom/support :) He did a good test, but he is never going to set the world alight with his complete lack of a trot! We got 33.5 which was a little disappointing, as we spent all of last year, and the beginning of this year consistently in the 20's. Looking back over videos we aren't doing anything different so not sure what's going on.

He warmed up beautifully for the SJ - jumping his socks off. We couldn't get him to touch a pole despite going higher and wider. In we went, he fell over fence 1 so I gave him a kick. He shook his head at me, and towed me round for 2 down... again. Totally careless.

So we now only have 1 RF left... Broadway in 2 weeks and I am not feeling too hopeful now that Billy seems to have completely lost his bounce.

We have been jumping much bigger than 90 at home so we are beginning to wonder if he has lost respect for smaller fences. We are taking him schooling over courses over the next couple of weekends to try and fix it but please keep your fingers and toes crossed for us.

Any words of wisdom?! So galling to know that he had 3 RFs last year, and 4 this year and it looks like we won't be going to Badminton :(

Nothing helpful to add, I'm afraid. Just wanted to say that I hope Billy gets his bounce back soon and that you get the result you are hoping for at Broadway.

Don't give up hope yet! :) Things can change and im a big believer that everything happens for a reason!

That is usually my attitude so I shall try my best to reinforce some PMA! I told myself that Billy didn't qualify last year because he secretly knew it would be cancelled so wanted to save me the disappointment ;) Maybe this year he didn't fancy ending his season in september so wanting to squeeze in an October run?! If it doesn't happen then Murphy and I can crack on at Intermediate, and we can work towards some Novices with Billy as that's the level we are at home :)

Thanks for your response - much appreciated :)

Sabel that is helpful! Thank you very much for your well wishes, it will definitely give us a boost knowing people are behind us! :):)

Oh, I really hope that Billy gets his Mojo back in time for Broadway! :(

If he feels OK in himself I would stick to doing cavaletis and gymnastic jumping and really get him using his back and concentrating on the job in hand, but only if you think he's up to it... no point in pushing him if he's not right, but only you can tell really.xx

I just hope Billy is saving himself for the final attempt........I'm sure it's all mean't to be! Everything crossed for Broadway, SO hoping we can be there together!

Do you wonder if maybe he is just tired? Has he been out a lot this season, it's getting late in the year, maybe he just needs a rest? Maybe give him an easy-ish two weeks and it might improve his enthusiasm for his last event? Just an idea as obviously I don't know him as you do but I find my own horse sometimes gets a bit sour if I do too much for too many weeks, if I give him a few quieter weeks without competing he tends to get his mojo back and come back better than ever the next time we go out. Wouldn't worry about fitness now as I'm sure he's very fit already, two quieter weeks won't do any harm I wouldn't have thought.

Argh, I completely share your frustration. I only had one qualification which I used up at Little Downham this weekend. Two down in the show jumping due to my completely rubbish riding cost us second place. Frustrating when she'd jumped clear at BSJA on the Monday.

I will keep my fingers crossed for Broadway for you. Perhaps as others have said a little bit of a break between now and then might give him his spring back.

Thanks Ali, we took him to pop round a small course yesterday with lots of grids and he started dreadfully, towing me around with complete disrespect for the fences. I hopped off and tightened the kirb strap of my universal by 6 holes (!) to where it used to be before I lent it to someone who clearly changed it and I hadn't noticed (mega-oops!). He then jumped like an angel - polite and careful. It would be lovely to think the issue is as simple as tightening a kirb strap but I am not going to get ahead of myself! I am keeping everything small and quiet, with no pressure to try and keep him happy so we shall see... only time will tell!!! :) xxx

Oh we would SO love to join you and Mabel!! Billy is dying to have an adventure with Mabel after hearing all of Murphy's stories from Aldon so let's hope the little scamp pulls the proverbial finger out!! P.s. Can you believe how quickly the last year has gone?!?!? xx

Hiya - Thanks so much for replying :) This is something I have been thinking about but I'm not too sure as he has had a very quiet season, and had 2 weeks off completely at the beginning of August when he lost a shoe which we couldn't get back on. He came back absolutely WILD, enjoying himself far far too much with all sorts of acrobatics at West Wilts RF. I think you could be right though and maybe he is feeling a bit "off" with his coat changing etc. I am giving him a quiet 2 weeks now - he owes me nothing so what will be will be!! I will take him with the attitude of having a blast with my boy as it will be our last run of the season :) I will keep you posted!

Oh Rach I'm so sorry, I know just how you are feeling. It's agonising isn't it! Eventing really is the heartbreak sport! At least you have now rounded off your season with a happy and healthy horse and that's the main thing :) I will keep you posted with our progress at Broadway... eeek
