Bindweed - Help!

I've noticed that we have bindweed in our field and knowing what a nightmare it can be, I'd really like to get on top of it.

What is the best way to deal with it? Is there a good weed killer to use? Or is vigorous topping the way to go?

The problem is that it is very much mixed in with the grass so we won't be able to use Roundup as it will kill all the grass as well - really I want to spray the whole fields if possible.

Any advice welcome!

Hi Kit

Firstly their are two types of bindweed, a lesser with small white-pinkish flowers only afoot high and found growing in grass and the greater with large pure white flowers up and over 3 metres high.

I am surprised that the horses do not eat both andare not the best control, yes not poisenous.

In the garden an issue and take 2-3 years to kill out.

To control use Round up and spray when it is in flower or late june when you have a good surface area to cover.
Round up will kill the roots first so translocated
but you will kill the grass too.

Or you can use thesprays for rugwort or SBK from the Garden centre,

Bindweed is one of the easiest, except when it is betweed your favorite Rhododendron or Carnation.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH:eek:

The dreaded bindweed this is very hard to kill normal weedkillers wont touch it we have gone through this with our guy who does our fields for 3 years he said very hard to rid it round up wont touch it he has tried two very strong weedkillers ( proffessional ones not diy store ones )

when he did our field he had to go and check the legals with pets etc as this one XXXXXXX as you cant even sell the manure from the grass when it gets eaten for some time after you done it . but has done the trick really knocked it back cant see any did cost tho £ 170 just for 2 acres if you want the product i will phone Arthur and ask him. we have weedkilled our fields yearly and nothing has touched them like this one

and no did not kill the grasshere is a pic of our grazing after

obviously it depends exactly where it is growing but if possible push some canes into the ground and it will grow up the canes then spray with glysophate (roundup tumble weed)or other systemic spray. it will kill everything including grass

I think bindweed is poisonous but it can't be too bad as mine are still alive and they have it in the top of the field. We top it as they don't eat it, it controls it but thats about it.
I had an agronomist look at it and he said spraying it would never work long term, would only maybe knock it back for a season and would take out the grass, and the bindweed would grow back faster than the grass, so we just live with it.
