Just though i'd ask your advice on a bit for Aleeta. She came back from her 2 weeks being long reined and has got a sore mouth

. She was originaly being long reined in a fulmer snaffle but she played withit a lot so I took her rubber loose ring snaffle along for him to try with her. She doesn't play with it as much but she has got sores where the loose ring have pinched. What other bits would you advise? I have a myler snaffle (the one with the single joint) that I could try or a french link but was worried that these may be a bit harsh for her. Any advice much appreciated.

I long reined my youngster off the noseband and didn't have a problem. He is now in a Full Cheek French Link Snaffle which is a lovely bit for a youngster. He plays with it a lot which is a good thing as he salivates well and that is something I encourage. I would let your horses mouth heal fully for a few days before using anything.

We have always used plastic mouthpieces with a peanut in the middle. Make sure the mouthpiece is not too fat - this can sometimes make them sore. Also try putting a little honey on the bit to encourage salivation. Most soreness is caused by dry mouths

would worry me that he let her get a sore mouth firstly ,
and i would give her a few times with out the bit maybe use the rings on the cavasson first when the bit is just sitting in her mouth, gosh i hope that makes sense.

You can try bit 'biscuits' to stop the bit pinching her, but i wuld let it heal first with her being a youngster. Try vaseline too to stop any pinching. Horses with very fleshy lips are more prone to this problem, don't know if that is the case with yours. Additionally, a french link is actually more gentle than a single jointed snaffle as it doesn't have the nut-cracker action, but it depends on the horse as to what they prefer. Plus, it is good if they play with the bit, mouthing should be encouraged and it gives a youngster something to play with whiile they work. xx
