Hi, my horse is a bit fussy in the mouth (had his teeth done and all fine) . He really rubs his mouth in his jointed snaffle and starts pulling when he gets sore, I put him in a kimberwick without the curb chain and the reins not in the slots, he was really soft and worked beautifully. He was in a Myler before I had him, I was wondering what people would recommend? If I am forking out for an expensive bit and he is a fussy type, I would like a few options ! He hated my hanging cheek French link and slightly preferred my loose ring lozenge snaffle, but still was not keen.
Thanks in advance :)

To me, a kimblewick without the curb and reins not through slots is just a hanging cheek bit although I stand to be corrected. What mouthpiece does it have? Ported?

The Bit Bank is a good place to start. There are so many bits available now - its a really technical and complex subject. But if you talk to an expert like the bit bank not only can the advise you - you can also borrow the bit for up to 30 days and return it if is doesn't suit. A gift for those of us with fussy horses!

If it is a normal kimblewick mouthpiece, then you are essentially riding him in a straight bar snaffle (with a port). I would try that for a start. If his previous bit is making his mouth sore I would take a very hard look at both the bit and how you are riding him (takes two to pull...).

Second talking to the bit bank - they recommended something I'd never heard of for my small mouthed horse who was getting her tongue over everything else I'd tried. Its worked like a dream.

I have very soft hands, I ride as minimally as possible , my other young pony stops / slows purely on my seat and that's how I like them schooled :) There is no soreness visible, I had him all checked over by my vet again yesterday just to be sure. I can just tell he is getting irritated by it when he rubbed his face. So far he is going very well in the kimberwick so I will school him in that until he is more balanced and responding better to my seat, then try a hanging cheek straight bar. There are so many to choose from! Thanks for the help, I will talk to the bit bank and see what they advise .
