Hey, i am in dire need of some clear advice on what bit to get for my pony. She's a 14.2 welsh x thoroughbred, and unfortunately has become increasingly strong out on hacks and sometimes in the school. She has had back problems in the past and has found it hard to work in an outline, which I am slowly trying to help her with. I was riding in a snaffle, from which i moved on to a three ring dutch gag, simply for a bit more stopping power outside the school, but this isn't great as obviously, it pushes her head up. I was hoping someone could recommend a bit they have had success with with a horse like this. I dont want to put a huge bit in her mouth, as someone tried this on her before and it simply made the problem worse.
Thankyou, Helen.

first, obviously, get her teeth done by someone very good. this has been the solution to a lot of 'strong' horses.
have you thought of a kimblewick maybe? very difficult to advise without seeing you and her.
give and take with the reins, not giving her a solid pull to pull against, may help too. best of luck

You could try putting a curb strap on your gag. Neue schule do one for this exact purpose, and I'm sure there is someone on ebay who does as well. Attach to the top ring.

I have just been reading some advice given to me about a bit for my welsh cob who leans on my hands and can be very strong. They suggested a McGenis snaffle i havent tried it yet but sounds like it will do the job
