Hi
I am riding a horse for someone but am going to use my own tack so I don't have to pick it up every time. At the moment he is ridden in a 3 ring gag, but I don't think he is comfortable in it, I don't think he is keen on the poll action. I am told he needs a strong bit for hunting, I won't have him this fit, and will be hoping to do a bit of everything.
Any advice please.
Thanks

Look in his mouth to see the conformation. Then you can narrow it down as to what bits may be worth trying. Generally i find horses prefer double jointed rather than single jointed bits. The way the horse goes and your ability are also considerations. Then see what bits you can borrow and ride in them for several weeks before making a decision. different bits have different actions- so you need time for both horse and rider to get used to the new form of communication.

Would it not be better to have the tack in a tack room that you and the owner have access to? I wouldn't be happy to change the tack on a horse that wasn't mine if it wasn't going to be a permanent change. I have changed all of Jazzy's tack, but with the full permission of the owner, and I'm the only one to ride him.

Good thinking teddyt. thanks
Eriskay, the owner hardly ever rides him so it will be pretty much a permanent change, I can't ride in his saddle cos it is far to big for me, and it is uncomfortable, and the owner won't keep his tack in a tack room, he keeps it at home-he has no problem with my using my own tack anway. With all due respect and no offence intended that wasn't really my question anyway :)
