My 4 year old currently has a Fulmer bit, its what she came with, but im finding it very harsh on her mouth.
Some have suggested a plain D ring jointed snaffle, other a happy mouth, or a copper one, others a straight bar snaffle.....
Help!!

She is only a baby, and just been broken in, she is senisitive little flower!!

Thank you.

For the best advice around, & unbiased, contact Heather Hyde via the link below. She is an acknowledged expert in the field of bitting. There's a contact tel No on the site.

Er unbiased??? Heather is great and knows a lot, but isn't going to recommend a myler above a Neue Schule, so is therefore biased.

Not saying its not a good idea, but should know that if you call anyone who sells bits (me included) you are only going to get a recommendation of bits they sell.....

So onto mine - lozenge full cheek with german silver mouthpeice, or peanut link full cheek flexi, or nathe

Nathe being kindest, but only the loose ring version is affordable and you may loose the steering a full cheek / fulmer offers.

Love a KK ultra. And ride practically everything in one. Without exception they just all love it.

I spoke to Heather a few years ago, before she only did Nue Schule bits, for bitting advice & was quite frankly appalled. The advice was terrible (not just my opinion, I ran it past my AI friend in case I was wrong) it was as if she didn't listen to a word I said about my horse, just heard the word "big" & went on that! She then became rude & insulting about my riding (she'd never seen me ride) when I wouldn't order a bit there & then.

I phoned another bit bank & got some ideas that sounded far more suitable from someone who seemed prepared to listen to the problem & the horse's needs. She also didn't recommend only her more expensive bits! The only problem was my horse went so much better in the bit she recommended (Myler low port comfort mouthpiece with pelham sides) that I had to go back & get a dressage legal comfort snaffle for competing in! So overall it cost slightly more than buying from Heather

Just my experience, I daresay she has hundreds of happy customers. Maybe I caught her on a (very) bad day.

But you are only giving advice on what you selling as well, aren't you?

People can always take advice & decide where they will buy the bit recommended. They may go for that bit or one of identical maunfacture from a different supplier. Neue Schule & KK being very similar. On the other hand the buyer can go to another outlet & get a bit again of similar manufacture but being very much cheaper. I didn't say you had to buy from her...did I.

Mmmm would agree I think!! Why would someone employed to sell a certain brand happily sell something else?
This is why I love these forums...you get so much advice based on experience. I could lend you my KK if interested. They are expensive to buy if not knowing your horse would go well in it.
(Yes I am very trusting!!!!)

When I bought my green 6 y.o. in Feb he came with a fulmer he'd been in since breaking I assume as the same lady had kept him from age 18 mnths. I've since changed him to the neue schule 'Team-Up' and he goes much better with it and as he is quite nappy I find it is still good if not better than the jointed fulmer for turning.
