well here goes - please be nice
I took my boy out hunting sat and we go most saturday, but this weekend we really did run out of brakes and i really do mean run out of brakes.....
This can sort of ish happen, as the season moves on... but first time ever I've really had no control. He's not new to hunting and is a pleasure to ride normally, but I got a little freaked by it on saturday. So pulled out of main field and edged hunted him and the tried to go back to main field, not good. He also not bothered about having stable mates, so can't use them to help him.
BUT he is a fantistic hedge hopping/jumper it's I just would like to decide which one we do

I know he's very fit and is having hard feed but not excess. When i event him, he goes in a snaffle and half way round course i run out of brakes but target system works, so not a problem, so it's a similar thing (ish)
Currently using cheltenham gag - sugguestion i've had are cherry roll gag or something with curb chain
What's your suggestion?

How about a Myler Combination. This uses the same poll action as a Ch gag but extra pressure on the nose too for more control.

my boy goes in a cheltenham gag but recently he hasnt been going as well in it - put him in a kimblewick today and he adored it!! and we may also try a myler of some sort or poss an american gag

What about a Tom Thumb (not sure if they're classed as a gag or not). They have a bit of leverage and the one I've got is a french link with little rollers ob it. It worked a treat on a huge mare I had that used to take charge a little too much for my liking! (I did hunt her in a hackamore once but I think that's frowned upon).

My welsh cob is an angel to event/XC, but v strong out hunting (worse if he is nearer the back - I think he has ambitions to be the fieldmaster's horse). I have tried an american gag, and a cheltenham gag without any success. The only bit which consistently works is a straight bar pelham. I use it with roundings, but if you were good at riding with 2 sets of reins I'm sure that would work even better.
NB - Ben pulls by putting his head down and leaning, so if that's what your horsie does then the pelham will definitely work. Pelhams come in so many different mouthpieces, there is surely one to suit.
Good luck! (having no brakes out hunting is not a very nice feeling)

which is what why i'm out there to brush up on xc before eventing

Couple of photos (hope they are big enough to see the bit) at the opening meet this year. I think he is like Kelly1982's horse and prefers a straight bar, but have also seen pelhams with joint, doudle joint, rollers etc and not expensive to buy compared to mylers etc.

Ben loves it the days our fieldmaster brings his younger horse out, then he gets to ride up beside him and jump on ahead if required. Pity he is only 14.3, would need a v small master to ride him.

Popped into local tack shop and had a very good chat with bit lady and i walked out with pelham, single jointed, curb chain and rubber guard and thin curb leather reins. With advise of you'll only need it for a couple of times and you'll be able to go back to gag (with i personnel perfer), as hunting in double reins will be hand full -if you know what i mean
