I'd be really grateful if some of you guys could help me out. I have an over-height Dales who I mainly just hack out, but we also do a bit of jumping and last summer we did our first few shows (WH classes and ridden cob-type classes). For hacking out, jumping at home and at unaffiliated competitions he's fine in his kk ultra, but as soon as we're in company he gets excited and very strong. I'm very light in the hands and hate to feel as though i'm having to pull on his mouth to maintain control

A while back I used a dutch gag on the 2nd ring with success, however since we've been using the kk ultra he doesn't seem to settle in the dutch gag. He tosses his head quite a bit and just doesn't seem 'comfortable' in it. I wondered whether he's not keen on the single joint?

Whilst we were showing last summer I was struggling to hold him in group canters etc and someone suggested I show him in a pelham. I got a rubber pelham and had great success with it. I can stay light in the hands and still feel comfortably in control. However, because I'm not the most experienced jumpers and haven't used double reins much before, I'm wondering if I should try something else for his WH classes, or to keep with the pelham and get more practice jumping with double reins.

However, I definately need to be able to gain more control when on farm rides etc. In his kk ultra our brakes disappeared completely! Should I try him in the pelham in these situations, or would I better just using the pelham for showing. If so what would you recommend I try? I was wondering about a waterford (with him not appearing to like single joints) but have not used one before.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks

You horse has just got used to erogomic bits, which is probably why he's gone off the single joint

I'd suggest a lozenge 4 or 3 ring gag, or universal if you want to be fashionable - these don't cost the earth (£20)

I'd save the pelham for showing unless you are doing working hunter

Thanks for the advice, I'll try and get hold of a gag with a lozenge to try. Would this be suitable to use in a working hunter class?
