Got a horse few months ago, came with an eggbutt snaffle, was clear that he didn't like single joint, changed to a NS hanging cheek with lozenge. Much much softer an better. However he can have a tendency to tank off when on new hacks, unfamiliar teritory. Throws his head up quite high, he's an older lad 19, doesn't really listen to seat aids !!! Was looking at the Stubben EZ control bits, or possibly Myler. His teeth are done upon getting him, and have been done again 6 months later, so all fine from that side. Any advice/info please.

Well TBH I have no idea, I'm new to this too, so would be really interested to hear any comments from more experienced people? My horse is in a Pelham with curb chain and he still tanks off .... In the arena lol
I would love to get him in a softer bit,
I have heard my trainer and another horse owner having the same issue they have tried all sorts - turned out an simple bit (sorry can't remember the name, but it just a very basic light bit) was the best and slightly stronger aid and a little more work on training from the rider .... He would REALLY go when out in the desert as he was ex endurance, but now he has chilled somewhat
Hope you find some answers that will help

Good luck

If he is softer and better in the hanging cheek lozenge, leave it alone. Sounds like the throwing head up and tanking is a naughty habit. Maybe try some schooling exercises to get him together and concentrating when he decides to prat around on a hack, a little shoulder in, extending etc. If he is worrying because its unfamiliar try long reining to build up his confidence? Hopefully he is not too old to learnt that being a prat gets him his own way!!
