Good morning.

I'm currently riding my warmblood in a Eggbut Happy Mouth and 99% of the time that is absolutley fine- but although he has not tanked off with me, when we are in company I'd like some extra brakes especially for fun rides going into fences.
I don't want to harden his mouth if I can help it and he can get over bent so would prefer not to have poll action bit.
Any advise would be much appreciated.

Thank you

I think you're going have to try out a few - all horses respond in their own individual way to different bit pressures:- will he react sensibly to more pressure on the nose, or a nutcracker action, or a fixed bar bit or a waterford-style? Only you really know your horse, and you probably need to experiment a bit to find what works. I ended up with 3 ring snaffle, so I can alter the pressure depending on the circumstances.

But whatever bit you've got in - if the horse is going to get excited on fun rides when approaching fences, then he will do whatever you put into his mouth. More Fun Rides, more Cross Country Courses and more training is going to be the best option. Combined with a bit that works for you.
