Ok this IS yet another bit question but I know you all know some good stuff so I'm hoping for an answer. Have found a good bit for the horse who takes hold of bit - Waterford. Happy with that bit. However out hunting I do need extra brakes and I ride in a Waterford mouthpiece gag (3 ring/Dutch) However I use it - on the main ring or the next ring down with one rein (never tried the third) and even with two reins - he throws his head up and down when I apply it. I am assuming that the poll pressure is too much even on the main ring. Would a padded headband help and can anyone suggest a waterford mouthpiece available that provides brakes without poll pressure????? Help. I get myself in a right pickle about bitting. Thanks in advance.

My mare is ridden in a waterford snaffle, she hates the action of a 3 ring gag, but goes really well in a pelham, 2 reins when I need some brakes. You can get waterford mouthpiece pelhams. They don't have as much poll action as a gag.

Thanks Irishcobs. I did wonder about a Pelham but not sure you could get Waterford mouthpieces. I will go and have a good old internet search (well just as soon as I have cleaned all today's mud from my tack....

I found the hanging cheek was about the same strength as her snaffle on my mare. May work better on others though.

I didn't think they did have poll action? They just hang in the mouth rather than on the tongue. Shall have to ask Druid she was explainly about them on another forum.
