My horse has recently had a visit from the vet who found that his bit has been rubbing on the bars in his mouth - I noticed he seemed really irritable with is head when I was riding and he was attempting to go on the bit but just couldn't do it , it seemed to hurt him! His bit was a loose ringed snaffle with a french link - it turned out to be too long or big for his mouth. How do you know if a bit fits a horse's mouth? Please could anyone recommend a bit that is just as mild as the one he already has or a little stronger and a bit with less movement ? - many thanks :)

To measure your existing bit lay it flat on the table and measure between the rings.

Size of bit in the mouth. Take hold of bit rings on each side close to the mouth and pull gently to the side. You should have a little finger width on each side bigger than the horses mouth.

Suggest that a Baucher, (hanging cheek) snaffle would be good. The rings are fixed so no pinching and the cheeks hold the bit lovely and still in the mouth.
