I have a 15hh cob cross who is coming up 4years old. I have been riding him in a hanging cheek french link snaffle, but has become very heavy and strong hanging on the bit and not giving ,but has done in the past ridden on the bit and very soft. Do I try a Waterford or Tom thumb as he has no respect at all for m at the minute . Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I would not want to put a 3 year old in a stronger bit at this stage, he may need a break if he has been in work for some time.

He is possibly teething, he may have wolf teeth, he will still be growing physically so could need a saddle or back check, all things to try.

I would use a loose ring rather than a hanging cheek, they often set themselves against a fixed ring and a loose ring should help.

I did try a Tom thumb tonight and he was an angel but I worry it is too severe for him being so young but then what's best pulling and pulling on his mouth or lightvhandschevresponds to with a stronger bit?

I'd be interested on this. Have a mare in exact same bit. Who also takes bog all notice of me sometimes!

Again try a loose ring, I really do not like the feel a hanging cheek gives, I use one sometimes when schooling different horses and have yet to ride one that feels really soft in it.

I've been trying a loose ring for about a month. It's fine. But I have no control whatsoever when she gets strong. And I know it's down to schooling etc. but she is a strong excitable horse by nature! She was in a Cheltenham gag when I first got her

I school and compete in dressage and my mare is in a NS loose ring Verbindend. However, my daughter started jumping her last year and she becomes very strong and excited so I bought a loose ring NS Waterford. I think this is a great bit as long as you don't yank the reins, it certainly works for mine.
