Hi, can anyone suggest a good bit preferibly a snaffle type, for a young horse who is in a lose ring snaffle, want to keep her in some form of snaffle as she isn't strong or anything just fights abit for the contact and is hard to keep where you want her, people have suggested : a bit with copper on it, a rubber jointed snaffle and a neue schule starter bit with lozenge. so any help or past experience is appreciated. she is a sweet willing mare, but just looking for a bit to help keep the contact there abit more

Hi.
I would sugest a loose ring sweet iron / sweet iron french link. I have had many a horse with the same problem. And have found the sweet irons work very well to help them mouth and take the bit better. The sweet iron is very soft and tastes nice, so the horse will slobber a bit. but it is worth it!!
You can allso get sweet iron rollers wich look, taste and handle beutifully. I tend to use them on youngsters so they are happy to take the bit and mouth lots and lots and find it hard to get there tong over them.
Hope this helps. X

My mare is very similair in that she just wouldnt soften through her jaw and neck completely, when she first came to me she was in a single jointed snaffle and although she was seemingly happy, i just felt she wasnt taking the contact down and relaxing into the bit. So i swapped it for a french link, she was quieter in the mouth and less likely to just hold the bit with this and so we were quite content to be ridden in a french link for this past year. Now we have started to lightly compete dressage, and the feedback i am receiving is extremely positive re; my little mares talent and paces, however as she still wasnt relaxing completely into the contact and would still try holding and resisting against the bit at times, a good friend of mine suggested we try a losenge with a thin mouthpiece ( my mare has a very fleshy mouth and thicker bits are very uncomfortable for her).
I have just this last week been riding her in a sweet iron loose ring losenge, and the difference is fantastic. She is relaxing so much more readily and taking the contact right down and starting to really swing through her back. After a good warm up period she is starting to hold herself in a nice self carriage

Blessed phone lol........
I would certainly recommend trying a sweet iron lozenge. I would like to try my girlie in the neuhe schue trans lozenge or verdibend ( my trainer feels she would be very receptive to one of these, and she rates them highly ) unfortunately, i couldnt afford one at this time so just bought a basic one at approx £15 for now.
Good luck with your baby :-)
