Hi
My horse (TB/Irish draught) has become incredibly strong out hunting. I ride him in a copper roller snaffle and grakle noseband but he's taking hold of the left side of the bit and locks his jaw and neck so I cannot stop him or steer! Friends have suggested either a cherry roller or a waterford and I wondered what other people might think?
Thanks

I have used a waterford on a very strong horse who tanked and it worked, i would try it. Plus you can get gags with waterford mouthpieces if you need some poll pressure too!!

Cool thanks for the replies. From what I've been reading on the web it sounds liek the waterford would fit exactly what he heeds. Just need to get hold of one now!

Thanks a mil for both suggestions. I checked out the website and it looks great.

I'm not sure what size my boy will need but i think the three ring waterford would be what I'll go for. I'm going to borrow one to start with so he can get used to it this week before trying it out hunting on saturday and if that's a success I'll get on with buying one.

Thanks again!

With a waterford you go half an inch bigger than your normal bit size unless a pelham then you use the same size otherwise the curb wont work! I hunt in a waterford gag with grackle with 2 reins. It has done the trick for my las used 3 ring gags, dexter racing bit, double, cartwheel. It's the only one that worked & I mainly ride him on the snaffle rein now but have the gag if I need to & he knows it!!

Agreee with Miamibear for source of bits but also echo others about Waterfords being great for strong horse. Mine used to get hold of left hand side of bit and fix onto it. His jumping and braking have improved a lot in the W/ford. I use a gag too for hunting and it works a treat.

My horse does exactly what you said yours does SueAllen! Great for my arm muscles but not for control! Think waterford gag may be the solution. Trouble is I can't test it until the weekend - very frustrating!

Have you tried a Myler Combination bit. It was brilliant for one of my last horses who pulled XC. It seemed to work differently than any other bits, as the horse was very mouthy (he hated usual pelhams and gags etc.) but he went well in this.

I have a similar thing - my mare just seems to be getting stronger and i don't want to spend the whole time pulling at her mouth to make her stop!
She is brilliant out competing but at home hacking etc she has become so strong i can hardly hold her. I nearly lost her twice this morning!
I am currently riding her in a loose ring waterford and it is better than a snaffle but i am still not going to take her hunting yet cause i don't think i can stop her!
Any ideas??She just seems to take hold and shes off, she does learn but not a huge amount, she just seems to go and that's that and i struggle to get her back to me!!
