Any suggestions for a bit for xc?

D normally works in a hanging cheek but we don't have quite enough brakes in this and she takes a flier into the jumps. I tried a dutch gag tonight but she went quite hollow.

I wonder about trying her pelham with roundings as she goes nicely with two reins for schooling but i don't think I could jump with two reins.

Any ideas?

Try a pelham with roundings. Lots of people will shout you down for it, because technically a pelham should be used with 2 reins, but lots of horses like it!

I usually use a hanging cheek on my sec D and for jumping I either use a double bridle or a pelham with roundings. Ned hates the pelham with 2 reins (but goes beautifully in a double, peverse creature that he is!).

Incidentally my horse hated a dutch gag too - it gave me no more control than the hanging cheek but he was not happy at all.

if you try a cheltnham gag make sure you ride in it with 2 reins/roundings because wilma was ridden with it just on the bottom rein, and her neck is upside down because of it

Pelham pelham pelham! I think they're the best bits ever! Nothing wrong with using roundings for jumping, better than getting tangled up with 2 reins (I struggle with jumping with 2 reins!)

I ride George in a myler mullen mout hanging cheek and I hack, jump and xc in a slotted kimblewick with a mullen mouth and low port with an elastic curb. I used to use a dutch gag, gave me control but he really started to protest hence the change.
