My little5yr old lw cob is in a sweet iron French link snaffle. She is fab to school and hack and will come back from a trot to walk etc with just a little half halt from me and riding using voice aids / my seat.

I'm happy with is bit but think we need something different for pleasure rides / when we start xc etc.

Today we did our first pleasure ride and she just ignored my aids when I asked her to stop. She didn't bugger off or anything but I may as well have been riding in a head collar! I felt like I was pulling alot ( which I don't want to do and which didn't have any effect anyway). - and actually what I did have to do eventually was pull on her neck strap instead to get her to stop when asked.

I'm thinking of trying a Cambridge snaffle as my welsh x goes really nicely in that. Any other ideas?

I used a kimblewick at our last pleasure ride, and it worked a treat - hardly had to "use" it after the first mega explosions when we arrived. Don't think they are very p.c though :)

We usually use a full cheek snaffle btw.

Thanks. I will try a fulmer or hanging cheek too for steering.

I'd rather have something that may be considered stronger that I don't have to use, than a soft bit I have to yank away on

I have a Pelham for such events, although never had to really use it.
Comes in for showing too.

another consideration is a market harborough which I found useful when my boy went through his tanking stage.

Just to add I only used the mh with a snaffle - just realised how that could be read incorrectly ;)
