Help! My new horse arrives from Spain on Thursday and I'm not sure what bit would be best to get him. He's been trained Spanish-style with a pelham (straight bar with a port, two reins) and only occasionally with a snaffle. I'd like to get him used to a snaffle so I can do BD eventually. Apparently Andalusians have small mouths and don't like the nutcracker action of a jointed snaffle, though not sure if a French link would be ok.

Can anyone recommend a non-jointed snaffle that would suit a small mouth with a low palette? He doesn't need the poll action or curb of a snaffle so it really is comfort in the mouth I'm worred about!

A mullen mouth snaffle? or even mullen mouth ported snaffle?

Ive never used one so couldnt comment.

or even a nylon or soft bit?

Good luck with the new horse - im very jealous!

I was thinking that too, but I know there are so many specialised bits on the market these days that someone may have had another suggestion. Will stuck with the cheaper option and go from there!

Wouldn't it be good if like a saddle fitter you had a bit fitter who would come out with a selection of bits and you could try a few! I'd pay £30 for an hour session if I was looking for a new bit! Marketing idea for someone expert in bits!

That is such a good idea! I spent a fortune and wasted a lot of time when I wanted to change Fany's bit.

Anyone wanting 6in bits PM me I have plenty!

A lot of bit banks will come out for a visit.

OP, a mullen mouth eggbutt should suit your horse and is also dressage legal.
