I have a horse who goes in a single jointed full cheek bit, and it worked for a short while, and now I'm having trouble again.

Why am I saying again? Well, because I recently switched bits from a straight rubber pelham to the now full cheek bit. He easily curls upon himself and has a hard time getting out of that habit as that's the way he has been ridden for the last five years before I got him late last spring.

He is a big horse who loves to jump, but can be strong, hence the pelham used earlier. I'm having the most trouble with him locking onto the jump and me being unable to get any reaction from him. which causes us going flat and knocking down everything.

I want a bit that can give a sort of "hey!" reaction, as he only charges through when I try to hold him.

I'm not looking for anything super strong nor a kimblewick, universal/Pessoa, or a gag bit of any type, as he does not respond well to any of them.

Thanks:)

I would approach this by using Action / Reaction as taught by Philippe Karl / Ecole de Légèreté .. the bit wont teach your horse to uncurl .. your hands will.

I use this training method daily, and it works wonders. But, I don't want a new bit because of curling, but because of him rushing...

I should have stated my reason for changing from a pelham to a single jointed was because of the extensive curling, which became worse when using said pelham.

Maybe a hanging cheek Waterford? It’ll sit nice and still when he’s quiet but give you a bit more of a reaction when you’re jumping…hopefully ?

I had a look in my barn manager's extensive bit collection ending up, not exactly with a hanging cheek, but a full cheek Waterford. Praying that it's going to work?
