Please could someone tell me what is the different between these two bits in action, severity and function.
I need a bit more control of my horses head in the show ring for novice classes and was thinking about one of the following bits but not sure which to go for.

Not much really. I'd say the bottom one would have more poll action as more distance between mouthpiece and stop. Also likely to be more securely held. It's also got loose ring sleeves so less likely to pinch.

Neither, however, are snaffles so unlikely to be allowed/welcomed in Novice classes.

Wilkie snaffles of both types. The bottom one is the original wilkie snaffle, named for Peter Wilkinson (Fylde Saddlery)

NNeither, however, are snaffles so unlikely to be allowed/welcomed in Novice classes.

You'd be surprised. These crop up everywhere, perfecting for creating a false outline and accepting in LR/FR classes :(

The two wilkie "snaffles" are allowed in novice shows, as far as I know, but they are most definately not allowed for dressage :)

Both are very similar in action, but the top one tends to have thinner bars so can be more severe, whereas the bottom one has more poll pressure so is more likely to tuck head in.

If you want something that will not look like a wilkie, try a myler snaffle as they have holes in the bit rings that are more subtle.
