Bit HELP?

Hi everyone, in need of some help!!

I have a 16.3 ISH mare/tank lol!!

I've had her since September and various issues with her being very very hot! Over time we are slowly getting somewhere... I think or I don't know if I'm just learning to ride her. She was sold to me in a Pelham but took her out of it as never felt she accepted it. I bought her from a home where she was hunted/team chased but had previously show jumped.. which is what I brought her to do (after having a 4 year break). i now have her on pro kalm which does help but I really, really struggle to hold her when jumping. She is incredibly strong, I'm currently using a market harbough which has helped..but need advice on a bit to use.. I've had her back done and was no issues and is booked in for her teeth next week. Any ideas guys??

Well, it seems there was a reason she was in the pelham, no? Why not put her back in that and see what she's like. Obviously she needs further schooling, but no point in getting into a tug of war in the meantime.

Yes, but when I spoke to the people who broke her they said she was always schooled in a snaffle and jumped in a 3 ring gag on second hole. But as she is now 17 she's obviously been ridden by many others. But yes might be worth trying the Pelham again.

You've bought something that is always going to be strong and fast. She has show jumped, hunted and team chased. This is always going to be a powerful fast animal. Bitting well is going to be part of it - but a larger part is going to be you learning her pace and being able to stay with her. Also as a mare you are likely to need to negotiate with her rather than dominate her. If you don't already have a regular instructor now is definitely the time to ask for help!

Each horse is individual but I have to say I am not a fan of the pelham bit generally. In my experience it tends to make horses lean more so it wouldn't be my "go to" bit for a strong horse unless used with two reins by an established rider. (Gags similarly) If you are going to use roundings I tend to edge more toward a kimblewick instead. For a strong SJ'er I've found bits like the NS Elevator a godsend - but you need an established seat or you'll just end up in a pulling match which will damage her mouth.

Speak to your instructor first - then perhaps also a conversation with the bit bank or similar. There are so many bitting solutions out there. But don't expect a bit to solve all your problems. It will help - but you need to build your relationship with her and your schooling together.
