My horse goes in a snaffle but goes on a pelham when he is jumping. I was just wondering if there are any middle grounds? he can be quite strong and I would love to have something to run him in when hacking

Personally I’d put a Cheltenham gag as stronger than a Pelham if both are used with two reins. I’d try a universal with roundings and see how that goes. There are also Pelhams with very short shanks.

What is wrong with the pelham? You just use the top rein (like a snaffle) unless you actually need to use the bottom rein also. Or do you mean you are using it with roundings? If so then I suggest two reins.

A kimblewick maybe? Or a butterfly pelham if you don't want something as strong, though it depends how tight you have the chain on. You could use a leather curb strap instead if you don't want it to be as severe.
