Bit Mechanics

I was having a conversation the other day about bits and it got me thinking that I really haven't got much idea about how different types of bits work - most horses I've ridden have just been in a bog standard snaffle. People have so many different opinions it all starts to get confusing. So has anyone found a good online article about how various bits work?

Interesting reading I wanted Spring in a neue schule hanging snaffle with w french link type losenge in it and reading that its a good choice especially if a get a wider mouth piece....
Flat hunter type bridle with no flash...(in brown haha)

However for double bridle I cant decide what this is recommending as best? would it be the 2 bits or the 1 bit....... Again this is a flat hunter type with no flash (in brown)....

any advice without a full on row

That's a really interesting article thanks. The pictures are really helpful. One thing surprised me though - I've always been told that a loose ring stops the horse from taking hold of the bit so it's interesting the author says there isn't much off a different between that and the eggbutt.
