... how do you all feel regarding vaccine for flu in horses?? I know that if you compete a lot and have contact with other horses it can be a good idea but i have been speaking to my friend who is a vet for the maf and he doesnt do his because they dont have that much contact with others??? what do you recon????

i don't vaccinate against flu until they start affiliated comps, and then i have to. i don't like the vaccs at all - they only protect against certain strains (sod's law, never the one going around at the time) and they can very occasionally make horses very ill... had a nice horse vacc'd once and we nearly lost him from it, vet had to come back out every day for a week, horse spent most of that time on the floor convinced it was dying. not impressed.
anti-tet is vital, but not flu, imho.

It's not just a good idea....it's mandatory if you are competing at affiliated competitions.

When I got a horse just for hacking the vet said that you could do without flu vaccine if you were prepared for a nasty but non-fatal illness but that you shouldn't be without a tetnus vaccine as it is generally fatal

When I rented a paddock and kept my horses on their own I didnt vaccinate for flu - we only hacked so there was very little risk. As soon as I moved them to a livery yard though I had them vaccinated against flu. Tet I have always vaccinated against and always will.

I stopped flu jabbing mine, then realised it was only few pound more expensive than the tetanus on its own,so started up again!!!Only thing gets up my nose is you pay all that money for a tetanus shot then when your vet comes out to any cuts etc they give them another????why????

My vet suggested not having mine vaccinated against flu along with a number of other conditions, so I don't. I only vaccinate for sure-fire killer conditions; rabies and tetanus; again on the advice of my vet and my own personal research.
