Bit of a silly question but can you insure...

a field shelter??!

We have recently spent a reasonable amount of money of a field shelter for our horses and already we have had parts taken off it by thieves which is a worry considering our horses were in the field at the time too. Do the likes of horse insurance companies insure field shelters?

I have no idea, but if they do I bet the excess would make sure you didn't claim unless the whole thing disappeared.

Quite tricky to get insurance for it on it's own to be honest - is it near your house? It is maybe something you could insure on a household policy but they tend to only insure additional property/buildings within a certain distance of your main house. Still it's worth a try.

I bet the NFU would! Make sure you pin it down well. Our field shelter was well pinned down (we thought) but in high winds it took off, bounced all the way down our 28 acres and ended up smashed into matchsticks :-( We had it rebuilt though!

Well we rent land thats adjacent to the farm house. You can see the field shelter from the house, but I would say its about 50 metres from the house.

Surprisingly, my insurers insure "anything that I own" which include, when I double checked, my stables which are about 500 metres away from my house.

I do agree, however, that if you can get insurance for your field shelter, the excess wouldn't allow you to claim for bits being stolen. What on earth have they nicked??

Oh ok, trouble is we dont own the house so that does complicate things. Just one of the doors off the front got lifted off the hinges. We just thought that if something did happen to it, we have lost a lot of money there.

Do you insure the house though - ie buildings and contents? Or is it insured by the owner? The only thing you can do is ask around insurers. NFU are unlikely to want to insure the shelter on a stand alone basis (as would be the case with most insurers) but if you say had house insurance, contents and maybe the liability for the land covered with one insurer then they may be willing to include storm, material damage and theft cover etc for your shelter.

Is it just a field shelter or stables as well? Field shelters don't ordinarily have doors so i assume it's a little more than a standard field shelter. If you have no success trying insuring it direct then maybe try going through a farm/estate type insurance broker who can shop around for you and find out if you can get cover for it.
